Consulting Services

From time to time, we are contacted with regard to offering editorial ("book doctor") and other services to authors, other agents, publishers and the like. The following services may be provided on an hourly basis:

Contract Review: Perhaps you've found a publisher but are wary of the contract, yet don't want an agent (we recommend against this route, in general, but are aware that some authors follow it). We will review and negotiate your contract just as though we did the deal ourselves.*

Editorial Consulting: Consists of a review of an entire manuscript or a portion of a manuscript. A detailed editorial letter of the sort we provide to current clients or that an editor in-house may write will be provided. No line editing will be done. This is mostly concept, characterization and plot work.

Line Editing: We will review your manuscript or a portion of your manuscript and provide line-by-line editorial recommendations.

Please note that these are services that we provide to authors whom we have not taken on for representation. Employing us for these services does not in any way influence our decision regarding representation and you should keep in mind that we work with all of our clients editorially as part of the representation process, at no extra cost. So, if we have turned you down for representation, please do not consider hiring us on a consulting basis as an alternate way of getting representation. But please do consider hiring us to help you improve your work!

Finally, please note that a retainer will be required before we will begin work on any consulting projects.

Thank you.

*Please note that, while we are experienced literary agents, The Zack Company employs no attorneys and does not provide legal representation or legal services. If you would like your contract reviewed for issues relating to legality, you are advised to seek qualified legal representation.
