Genre:  Thriller

October 1962:  The Cold War ends when Fidel Castro launches two Soviet ICBMs at the United States.  One goes astray, falling into the Atlantic.  The other strikes Miami, devastating the entire state.  A two-day series of surgical nuclear and conventional strikes by the United States cripple the Soviet Union, which subsequently splinters.

 November 1963:  President John F. Kennedy and Vice-President Lyndon B. Johnson are assassinated simultaneously by unknown snipers.  As the US sinks into chaos, the Joint Chiefs of Staff override the Constitution, execute a bloodless coup, and declare martial law.

 Present day:  New York City after forty-odd years of martial law suffers a perpetual gray cloud cover and rainfall, a remnant effect of multiple nuclear strikes upon the world’s weather.  Troops patrol the streets.  A curfew remains in effect.  Just Business as usual for Chief Inspector Isaac January of the army’s Criminal Investigation Division of the New York Garrison.  That is until he is called to a grisly murder scene that is an exact copy of a scene that January has seen before, ten years earlier in the Middle East.  January suddenly finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy to guard the killer’s—or killers’—identities, a conspiracy that will target him, his friends and loved ones for death, and ultimately lead to the very pinnacle of power:  the Joint Chiefs....
