| Ronne tes Arhi, a warrior-woman and noble of the Empire who has been banished to the border for daring to criticize an Imperial decree, and Erith, a Plains barbarian cast out from his clan, meet at an isolated mountain outpost. In spite of all that divides them, they manage to overcome their mutual prejudices and become close allies, but the world Ronne left behind soon invades the peaceful outpost—the Empire has collapsed, and her family summons her back to defend their lands. Despite the enmity he knows he will face there, Erith feels compelled to accompany Ronne back to her home. Along the way, they encounter Talorgen, an old enemy of Ronne's, who has made a dangerous bargain in return for magical power—the likes of which have not been seen for thousands of years—and which he plans to unleash against the fallen Empire. In the end, the bond between the two warriors grows stronger than either could have imagined, as Erith joins Ronne and her people to wage war against impossible odds. |
