UNDER MY HAT is a memoir of Rachel Light's experiences as an Orthodox Jewish victim of domestic violence. It describes the three years during which she dated, married, and divorced her former husband. At the wedding, she was nineteen, a liberal feminist, religiously devout, budding intellectual looking to shape her own destiny. As the story unfolds, Rachel, now a doctor, shows the reader her innermost thoughts and feelings, all covered by a mask that she wore as she silently suffered a pattern of harassment and violence mixed with passion and forgiveness. This is the story of a girl becoming a woman, a victim becoming a survivor, and a journey of questioning and despair leading to healing and self-realization.
