 | UNDER MY HAT A Memoir of Abuse within the Orthodox Jewish Community Rachel Light, MD ****Rights Available**** Nonfiction/Memoir |
UNDER MY HAT is a memoir of Rachel Light's experiences as an Orthodox Jewish victim of domestic violence. It describes the three years during which she dated, married, and divorced her former husband. At the wedding, she was nineteen, a liberal feminist, religiously devout, budding intellectual looking to shape her own destiny. He was twenty-three, devoted, sensitive, and fervently, almost desperately, in love with her. It all looked ideal. Only, he had already broken her nose six weeks before.
As the story unfolds, Rachel, now a doctor, shows the reader her innermost thoughts and feelings, all covered by a mask that she wore as she silently suffered a pattern of harassment and violence mixed with passion and forgiveness. This is the story of a girl becoming a woman, a victim becoming a survivor, and a journey of questioning and despair leading to healing and self-realization.
Sure to be of strong interest to women and Jewish women in particular, UNDER MY HAT fills a market that not only will want to know, but needs to know, the torment many Orthodox Jewish women suffer. Jewish-American women stay in abusive marriages twice as long as non-Jewish women. Perhaps knowing that others like them have suffered and survived will help them to gain their independence as Rachel did. |
