Mythan A'Garrell is a living relic, the last of a legendary race of shape-shifting Were (as in werewolves) that once stood with Man and Elf against Proteus, a vile and twisted god, and his hideous minions, the Corrupt.  Now, Mythan has come out of hiding in the barony of Standar to help investigate a series of gruesome murders.  If he is discovered, it could mean the extinction of his people once and for all—but if he's right, and the Corrupt again stalk the earth, then his worst fears are already coming to pass:  Proteus is waking once more.

Ravenstorm is a living legend among her own secretive people, the Arman'al, an elite corps of assassins and spies in the service of her Baron.  As an unwitting agent of evil, Ravenstorm is sent to spy on Mythan's activities—and, if ordered, to kill him.  She is fearless, deadly, and unstoppable, but she quickly finds herself in the grips of a conspiracy that goes far deeper than the political realm in which she is a pawn.

Defeated and exiled a millennium ago, Proteus is indeed plotting to escape his prison and reshape the world in his own terrible image. In order to stop him, both Mythan and Ravenstorm will have to come to grips with the truth about themselves, each other, and those around them, before they are swept away in the nightmare to come.
